Looking forward to Part 2, Chris. Sometimes I wonder whether the picture in my mind of that restaurant would have been any different if I hadn't already seen the attached photo (although... maybe not?). You'd already painted it so vividly through your words.
I did something similar back in the late 90s. I had a pretty good job with a very well-known company in Los Angeles. Down the street was the Cat & The Fiddle pub. A group of us who somehow found one another would go drink vodkas and eat french fries at lunchtime. We'd head back to the office with a good old-fashioned buzz to get through the rest of the day and pretend like the buzz wasn't there, when it certainly was. I didn't think I had a drinking problem, though. So naive.
Your writing is so visceral, it sort of quenches your thirst but you want more. Like the beer and wine you drank on the job. It's so interesting that our culture can often approach alcohol as celebratory or a catalyst for fun-- but you show the truth of it. How sad it is. How sad it can make someones life. How sad what it can do to a company that is tanking. You say this, but you never say it. I'm a new fan and subscribed. Looking forward to reading more of your work!
